How can I efficiently keep a large basement (up to 4,500 sq. ft.) dry and comfortable?

The key is using a dehumidifier that truly works for large spaces. Our DryPrime 50 dehumidifier can remove up to 115 pints of moisture per day, effectively keeping walls, floors, and stored items dry.

It’s quiet enough to run in the background while you use the space, energy-efficient for long-term use, and offers flexible drainage options so you don’t have to empty the tank constantly. Even if the power goes out, it remembers your settings and resumes automatically.

Smart Humidity Control

If your target is 50% RH, the compressor stops when the internal sensor reads 47% RH. The fan (only using tens of watts) runs briefly to make use of leftover coil cooling—boosting efficiency and reducing waste.

Once humidity rises to 53% RH, the compressor restarts automatically. In the event of a power outage, the unit will resume its previous settings as soon as power is restored.

How can I compare the true dehumidifying capacity of different dehumidifiers?

Check the weight! Why? A dehumidifier's performance largely depends on the amount of copper inside. More copper means better dehumidifying power and energy efficiency. So, how can a lightweight unit claim such high capacity? The trick is that dehumidifying capacity varies with temperature and humidity—the higher these are, the more effective the unit appears. For example, the Gasbye DryPrime-50 model, weighing 43 pounds, pulls up to 115 pints/day at 86°F, 80% RH, 73 pints/day at 80°F, 60% RH, and 50 pints/day at 65°F, 60% RH. Some dehumidifiers claim 52 pints/day at 86°F, 80% RH but weigh just 34.6 pounds. Others even claim 100 pints/day at an extreme 95°F, 90% RH yet weigh only 30.9 pounds. You'll find that these lightweight models highlight their performance in high-temperature, high-humidity conditions to show inflated numbers. If you compare the dehumidifying capacity under the same temperature and humidity conditions, I’m confident you’ll see that Gasbye dehumidifiers offer great value for the price. We don’t mislead customers by labeling a mini-sized unit as a 100 pint/day dehumidifier (measured at 95°F, 90% RH) and then charging you over $200 for it.

Does the warm air from a dehumidifier increase AC costs in summer? Why do some dehumidifiers emit more warm air than others?

Dehumidifiers work similarly to air conditioners, which also emit warm air during operation. Although this warm air slightly increases the AC's cooling energy use, it reduces the AC's dehumidification burden. By letting your air conditioner (2000-3000 watts) focus on cooling rather than dehumidifying, running a dehumidifier (500 watts) will typically lower your overall energy bill. Stronger dehumidifiers emit more warm air, while weaker ones emit less. We’ve observed that some consumers are pleased when their new dehumidifier emits less warm air than their old one. However, this often simply means that the new unit has a lower dehumidifying capacity. As mentioned above, the amount of warm air emitted by the dehumidifier does not increase your electricity bill. In fact, it can actually reduce it (counterintuitive but true—you can search for more information if interested.)

What's the difference between 300-500 watt compressor dehumidifiers and 60-100 watt semiconductor-based dehumidifiers? Which is more energy-efficient?

In terms of cooling technology, compressor dehumidifiers are 5-6 times more efficient than semiconductor-based ones. Although a semiconductor-based dehumidifier consumes only 60-100 watts and seems more energy-efficient, you would need a bunch of them to effectively dehumidify a space larger than 300 sq ft. In contrast, a single 300-500 watt compressor dehumidifier can quickly reduce the humidity in a large room.

What environments are compressor-based dehumidifiers suitable for?

The Gasbye DryPrime-50 is a compressor-based dehumidifier with an internal compressor that causes vibrations and noise. It operates at around 45dB and is relatively quiet, making it ideal for medium to large spaces like basements, garages, and spacious living rooms. In these areas, it won’t disturb you while working or watching TV. However, it’s not recommended for use in small spaces like bedrooms.

Is ENERGY STAR the same as ENERGY STAR Most Efficient? Are ENERGY STAR Most Efficient 2023 and ENERGY STAR Most Efficient 2024 the same?

The US EPA has set two certification standards for dehumidifier energy efficiency. The ENERGY STAR certification indicates good energy efficiency, while the ENERGY STAR Most Efficient certification recognizes the top-performing products in energy efficiency. In 2024, the US EPA raised the most efficiency standards. Gasbye is the fastest brand to meet this new standard. This is because big brands often have large inventories of older models that need to be sold before introducing new standards, which can take 3-4 years.

Dehumidifier, Good Pus

I can't really do a true evaluation because I've only had the dehumidifier for less than a month, but I can honestly say my basement smells so much better. That damp moldly smell is gone. It was so easy to set up, and included a small hose for water drainage and a garden hose adapter for a lengthy hose. I love that it is very quiet and that it gives several options for how you would like your dehumidifier to run (continously, cycle on and off or using the timer). The only drawback was the warranty website, which did not work for me.

Very pleased - read this to save time deciding which dehumidifier to buy

I just received the Gasbye DryPrime-50-B Dehumidifier - I am really impressed! And . . NO, the manufacturer did not give me a financial or any other kind of incentive to write this review. After spending over an hour comparing the different models available on Amazon, I noticed that this had the most drying capacity of ALL the large units I looked at (115 pints/day at 86°F). Additionally, they add an anti-corrosion coating to the inside of their copper tubing to extend its working life. This unit is more quiet than the one it is replacing that died. Also, there are little things that they didn't need to add that tells me thoughtful designing went into this: a cord reel with a socket for the plug so it isn't dangling, retractable handle, instructional sticker on the user interface, great packing materials, an adaptor so the drain tube can be secured into a garden hose for additional length beyond the 5 foot tubing included. The other thing that I am aware of is quality - everyone advertises this BUT there is no way to tell if it is more than just a good sales pitch. The unit feels solid and has the some of the very best ratings on amazon (5 stars at 81% and 4 stars at 10%). They double Amazon's 30 day return policy, financially guarantee prompt service when you contact them and extend the 1 year warranty a full extra year! The only way a company can do those things is if it is absolutely sure it won't have to repair anything - in other words, quality is the only reason that can be offered. Hopefully this review cuts down on other people's time in choosing a quality dehumidifier.

They stand behind their products even when I had an issue!

Stopped working after 3 months however this is how the story changes…within days of reporting this issue I was contacted directly by Gasbye costumer service expressing deep regret for the issue. They provided me with a resolution that was fare and prompt! In this day of age how many companies stand behind their product without jumping through a bunch of red tape… not many! I will continue to by Gasbye products because they truly want you to be satisfied. All companies should pay attention to this type of customer service because without happy customers the future is bleak for them.

Really, really good customer service

I don't normally order a dehumidifier online for they can get rather abused by the shipping carriers and so what would normally be a good dehumidifier winds up breaking down well before its time. Well. . .it seems in my neck of the woods everyone was needing a dehumidifier at the time so nothing much was available locally. Hesitantly, I did some looking on Amazon to see if I could find one that was within my criteria of what I needed. After spending a good amount of time, I settled on this make and model.Once received, I pulled it out of the box and followed the recommendation of letting it sit upright for at least 24 hours. . .I let it sit for 28. The first thing that came to my mind when I had the unit fully out of the box was, "This really is a nice looking dehumidifier. . .and it doesn't seem cheap either." I've had many dehumidifiers in the past that had plastic so cheap that I bet if I had sneezed on it something would have cracked — not this one. After waiting the designated time frame, I started it up. Does it make noise? Yes, it does, like all dehumidifiers do; no such things as a "quiet" one. It is, however, not has noisy as others similar in size and capability. It rolls effortlessly, the controls are very simple to use and it comes with a manual, which is pretty straight forward. As for the water reservoir, it takes a little effort to pull out from the unit, especially when full, but it is pretty much on par with all the other dehumidifiers I've had in the past. For two days, it ran perfectly, filling up the reservoir in several hours. I was really impressed.Unfortunately, on the third day, frost started to build up heavily and would not defrost from the grills in the back, thus diminishing its dehumidifying capabilities. This wasn't good. I did some diagnostics on my own, but nothing seemed to make a difference, so I contacted the company and explained the issue and uploaded a photo of the frost buildup. The rep, Amy, got back to me later that day and said during shipping the unit might have lost some coolant and thus why it is frosting up so quickly. She wanted my SN off the back of the unit and my name and address for verification. After submitting the requested info, she got back to me and told me she is contacting the warehouse so they could send me a new one and I should receive it in five days; I got it in four. Wow. . .that is good service. No hassle, no nonsense. . .just a smooth experience. As I stated earlier in my review, many times dehumidifiers fail before their time not because of being a cheap product, but because of the rough housing by these shipping carriers (I remember when FedEx delivered my $2500 computer: the driver was flip-flopping it around the truck like it was a rubber tire. . .grrrrr. . .). This is no fault of the companies that make good products. Regardless of how well-made something is or how well it is packaged, prolonged rough handling will negatively affect pretty much any kind of electrical unit or equipment. It's basic physics. With that said, although I do not know how long this new dehumidifier will work, not knowing how durable the internal components are or how roughly jostled it was during shipping this second time around, for the company to say that they "stand by their products" and them giving me the excellent service that they did tells me they believe they have built a solid and dependable dehumidifier. From my experience, I have to concur.Thank you, Gasbye, for your respectful service.

Overall, I like this….

Overall I like this unit. It’s quiet, does a good job and has some nice features. One terrible design flaw however, is that if you want to use the garden hose attachment point, you need to have the fingers of a Lilliputian to screw it on! There is so little room, I could only turn it a fraction of a turn at a time, as you can’t get your fingers in there to just screw it on. So for that poor design feature I deducted one star as that was poorly thought out. Otherwise, it seems to be a good and effective unit.
